Eighth-ranked Orangemen edge unrated Cardinals in tiebreaker

The Crete High wrestling team had an eventful pair of meets last week, losing to Class B eighth-ranked Beatrice in a Tuesday dual on tiebreaking criteria after finishing in a 42-all deadlock before placing fourth in Friday’s 13-team Platteview Invitational.

Crete coach Aaron Wagoner said the Cardinals were just a step away, and around 11 points, from capturing a top-three team finish at Platteview, where Class A Bellevue East and Omaha Central captured the top two spots.

“We need to be able to finish in the final rounds,” Wagoner said. “We do a great job of putting ourselves in the medal rounds and now we just have to step up and finish strong. Too many times we’ve let our attitude get the best of us or we get sloppy with fundamentals. Those are the things that keep you from finishing at the top.” This article continues in The Crete News E-Edition

The Crete High boys’ basketball team scored easy wins over Fairbury and Columbus Scotus in a span of less than 24 hours Friday and Saturday, improving to 5-1 on the young season.

The Cardinals counted on 40 points from Carter Kent and Klay Uher on the way to a 59-35 win over the Jeffs Friday night at the Crete High gym before getting balanced scoring from Uher, Carson Deisley and Graham Newton in a 76-55 drubbing of the Shamrocks Saturday afternoon in Columbus.

Crete will close out their pre-Christmas slate Thursday by hosting Waverly with a 7:30 p.m. tip. This article continues in The Crete News E-Edition
